On InfoQ.com, an opinion piece has just posted: Use an Eclipse-style governance model for open source Java.

Currently, Sun has many open source Java implementations in various tools, templates, and frameworks all over the place; so, in a practical sense, this would be the most important thing to me if I were still a Java developer. There’s OpenSolaris, GlassFish, NetBeans, Jini, and many other various open source Java implementations, tools and frameworks on Java.net.

While IBM or (I meant to say…) Eclipse is certainly welcome to their opinion that an Eclipse-style governance model would work best for open source Java, it’s not a surprising one. But I think Sun has other plans for an open source Java community. Maybe, an Apache-like model on Java.net or maybe even Java.org, as well as perhaps even outsourcing to Apache.org. We’ll see. Simon Phipps who currently heads Sun’s open source Java efforts can only indicate for sure what Sun’s current open source Java governance model is or will be going forward. Personally, I think the Apache.org model is the best one out there. While it’s not without its problems, it just seems Apache is “tried and true.” If it hasn’t broken by now, it probably won’t ever break.
