More thoughts from Oracle OpenWorld: indemnification and open sourcing Java…

Also, see TheSeverSide.com post: Why Oracle Linux is a Good Thing. It brings up another selling point for “Oracle Linux” and the service around it that I forgot to mention: INDEMNIFICATION from copyright lawsuits like the kind SCO UNIX has pitched against Linux vendors and their customers. According to Larry Ellison in his Oracle keynote, “Oracle Linux” will indemnify all its customers from any liability.

Lastly, in Sun’s keynote, Jonathan Schwartz apparently said that open sourcing Java timeline will commence within the next 30-60 days, something I missed. Announced earlier in August at LinuxWorld, Sun plans to open source the Java reference implementation for much of the core Java Standard Edition and Micro Edition platforms. Open sourcing Java will NOT include Java Enterprise Edition, at least for now, which should not be a surprise. But who really cares, in a pragmatic sense?

What do you think was the biggest news around Oracle OpenWorld as it impacts your Java development efforts, if any?
