Java developers considering PHP?

Feb 26, 11:51 am

Are today’s Java developers looking for Web-tier alteratives to Struts, JSF, and even Ruby on Rails and Groovy/Grails? What about PHP or even better – PHP on Rails?

If you are one of these Java developers, why not? Possible reasons:

1. PHP is still the # 1 Web scripting language.
2. PHP on Rails like frameworks are emerging: symfony, CakePHP, and Zend Framework.
3. PHP may be easier to use/learn than Ruby for some.
4. PHP, at least in theory, should run on the new Java SE 6 platform and its JVM.
5. Java backing companies like Oracle, IBM, and BEA are also throwing a lot of $ and support behind PHP.

While I don’t hear much about JPHP on the same level as JRuby or even JPython – again, why not? What is your preferred Web-tier language/framework of choice: Ruby on Rails, PHP (on Rails), Python (on Rails), Groovy/Grails, etc.?
